What is Pelvic Floor Therapy?

The Pelvic Floor is essential in providing the body with stability, supporting the bladder/bowel, and sexual function. Pelvic Floor Therapy is a treatment approach that targets any imbalances or dysfunction in the pelvic floor and its supporting structures. The pelvic floor exam is only a piece to the overall picture of what is occurring within the body. The Therapist will assess the pelvic floor using an internal and/or external exam and assess how any pelvic floor dysfunction is affecting the rest of the body. During each session, the therapist is constantly assessing and re-evaluating the client’s body with the goal of improving the strength and functioning, and releasing any fascia restrictions within the body.

What should you expect in the Pelvic Floor Evaluation and Treatment?

In the first visit, the Pelvic Floor Therapist will review your history and physically evaluate and assess your whole body. Your history gives the Pelvic Floor Therapist a clearer picture of your condition and how it is affecting your life. The physical examination will include an external assessment and may or may not include an internal assessment. The internal assessment will be discussed with you and is dependent on your comfort level. The Pelvic Floor Therapist will always get consent from you to perform the internal assessment and treatment.
